Frequently asked questions about class 2 towbars

Do I need a towbar just for a bike rack?
Yes. Most bike carriers require a towbar to be fitted, even if you’re not towing a trailer. A Class 2 towbar is perfectly suited for this and is one of the most common reasons people come to us. You don’t need trailer wiring for a bike carrier, just the bar and tow ball.
It depends on the camper. Lighter soft-floor campers may come in under 1,200kg and suit Class 2 perfectly. Heavier off-road campers (particularly hard floors with a lot of gear) can push close to or above the Class 2 limit.

Check your camper’s ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass) and compare it to your vehicle’s rated tow capacity. We can help you work it out if you’re not sure.
Most modern Class 2 towbars are designed to integrate neatly with the vehicle’s rear. If your car has rear parking sensors, there are wiring solutions that will disable them automatically when a trailer is connected — we can include this as part of the installation.
Generally a couple of hours. If you’re also having wiring fitted it may take a little longer. We’ll give you a clear timeframe when you book.
Tongue weight (also called ball load) varies by towbar model and vehicle, but is typically in the range of 100–120kg for a Class 2 bar. This is the maximum downward force allowed on the tow ball. We’ll always confirm the correct spec for your vehicle at the time of fitment.
Possibly – most small to medium SUVs have a manufacturer-approved tow rating and are perfectly suitable for Class 2 towing.

Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, Subaru Forester and similar models are all common Class 2 fitments for us.
