Frequently asked questions about class 4 towbars

What's the maximum towing capacity for a Class 4 towbar?
Class 4 towbars are rated up to 3,500kg braked. However, your actual towing capacity is limited by your vehicle manufacturer’s specification: the towbar can’t exceed what your vehicle is rated to tow. We’ll always match the towbar to your vehicle’s tow rating, get in touch if you’re not sure.
In Western Australia, a brake controller is required for any trailer with a gross trailer mass (GTM) over 750kg. If you’re towing a caravan, horse float or larger boat, the answer is almost certainly yes. We can supply and fit a brake controller at the same time as your towbar — it’s usually more convenient to do it all in one visit.
The towbar itself typically takes a few hours. If you’re also having wiring, an Anderson plug or a brake controller fitted, allow a bit more time. We’ll give you an accurate estimate when you book.
Yes, absolutely. Diesel 4WDs and utes are some of the most common vehicles we fit Class 4 towbars to. If it’s a ute that works for a living, we can set it up to tow properly.
Yes. If you’re managing a trade fleet or business vehicles, get in touch to discuss scheduling. We can work through vehicles in a way that minimises downtime.

This is probably the most common concern people have, and it’s more nuanced than dealers often let on.

Under Australian Consumer Law, a manufacturer or dealer cannot void your vehicle warranty simply because you’ve had an aftermarket accessory fitted by an independent workshop. They would need to demonstrate that the accessory or its installation actually caused the fault being claimed – and a properly installed, ADR-compliant towbar is very unlikely to do that.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has been clear on this. If a dealer tells you that fitting an aftermarket towbar will void your warranty, it’s worth asking them to put that in writing – because in most cases, they can’t back that claim up.
